A smart thermostat is very good at some things and completely irrelevant to others. It will not make an upstairs bedroom stop running hot, and on a heat pump the setback habits people bring from a furnace can cost more than they save. Which control you need depends on what is actually bothering you.

Thermostats drift, staging gets left at factory defaults, and heat pump setbacks are frequently configured wrong. All of it is checked at annual service.

Everything most people know about thermostat schedules comes from living with a furnace. On a heat pump, some of it is actively wrong, and this is the single most common control mistake we correct.
- Furnaces recover fast. Drop the temperature eight degrees overnight and the furnace simply burns harder in the morning to catch up. Deep setbacks genuinely save money.
- Heat pumps recover slowly, on purpose. They produce gentler heat over longer runs, which is what makes them efficient.
- So a big setback triggers auxiliary heat. Asking a heat pump to climb several degrees quickly brings in electric resistance strips, which cost several times more to run than the heat pump does.
- The saving gets wiped out. You save a little overnight and then spend more than that recovering, and the thermostat reports nothing unusual because from its point of view everything worked.
- What to do instead. Small setbacks of two or three degrees, or none at all, and a thermostat that actually understands heat pump staging rather than treating the strips as just another heat source.
- Not every smart thermostat handles this. Some manage heat pump recovery intelligently, some do not, and the difference does not show on the box.
If your bills jumped after a new thermostat, this is the first thing we check. It is usually a configuration problem rather than a faulty unit, and it is fixed in a visit.
The box is the easy part
A smart thermostat is a straightforward purchase and a genuinely awkward installation, which is why so many end up either not working properly or working in a way that costs money quietly.
- The common wire. Most smart thermostats need constant power, and a lot of older homes have no C wire at the thermostat. The workarounds vary in quality and some cause intermittent faults that look like a defective unit.
- Staging configuration. Two stage heating, two stage cooling, auxiliary heat and emergency heat all need setting correctly. Left at defaults, the system runs on the wrong stage and you never find out.
- Placement. A thermostat on an exterior wall, in a draft, or in direct sun reports a temperature the rest of the house is not experiencing.
- Equipment compatibility. Communicating systems, dual fuel setups and multi-zone ductless all have specific requirements, and the wrong thermostat can disable features you paid for.
- Humidity control. If you have a humidifier, the thermostat should be managing it, ideally with an outdoor sensor.
