How they work

One machine that moves heat both directions

A heat pump does not burn anything. It moves heat, the same way a refrigerator does, and it can run the cycle in either direction. In summer it pulls heat out of your house. In winter it pulls heat out of the outdoor air, even cold air, and brings it inside.

That is why it replaces two machines with one. The furnace and the air conditioner become a single system, on a single electric circuit, with a single piece of outdoor equipment.

The version of this people remember from the 1990s struggled once the temperature dropped. Cold climate models changed that. Both Connecticut and Massachusetts now require ENERGY STAR cold climate certification for the larger rebate tiers, so the equipment that qualifies is specifically the equipment built to hold output through a New England winter.

Ducted

Uses the ductwork you already have. Sensible when the ducts are sound and correctly sized, which we check before quoting rather than after.

Ductless

Wall or ceiling heads, no ducts at all. Common here because so much of the local housing stock was built with hot water baseboard. Covered on our mini split installation page.

Where heat pumps make the most sense around here

The Connecticut River valley is unusual in one specific way: a large share of homes in Enfield, Windsor, East Windsor and the older Hartford neighborhoods were built with hot water baseboard or radiators and no ductwork whatsoever. That rules out a conventional ducted swap and rules in ductless, which is why so much of the heat pump work in this area goes in as multi-zone rather than central.

  • You heat with oil or propane. This is the strongest case financially. Delivered fuel is the most expensive way to heat a house here, and it is the scenario both state programs pay the most to replace.
  • You heat with electric baseboard. Connecticut pays an enhanced rate specifically for baseboard replacement, verified by measuring linear feet of baseboard before installation.
  • You have no central air and want it. A heat pump gets you cooling as part of the same project rather than as a second one.
  • You are adding on or finishing a space. Extending existing ductwork into an addition is often worse value than putting a dedicated head in it.
  • Your furnace or boiler is near the end. Replacing equipment that still has years left rarely pencils out. Replacing equipment that is about to fail is when the rebate math works hardest.

Where the answer is genuinely borderline, usually an older house with a leaky envelope and very cold design temperatures, we say so, and a dual fuel system often makes more sense than a heat pump alone.

Tonnage is calculated from AHRI cooling capacity, where one ton equals 12,000 BTU. Connecticut enhanced rates require verification of the existing system before installation. Massachusetts income-eligible households may qualify for more than the figures shown. Equipment must appear on the relevant state qualified product list. Program rates are reviewed and updated by the utilities periodically, and we confirm current terms directly with the program before quoting.

The trap worth knowing about in Connecticut. Projects are randomly selected for inspection. If you applied at the $1,000 per ton Energy Optimization rate but the inspector finds the old system was left integrated without a qualifying integrated control, the result is downgraded to $250 per ton. On a four ton system that is a $3,000 swing, and it is the most common way homeowners here lose rebate money.

Equipment that actually qualifies

Two things disqualify a heat pump from the money, and both are decided before anything is ordered.

  • Cold climate certification. The larger rebate tiers in both states require ENERGY STAR cold climate certified equipment listed on the state qualified product list. Integrated controls have to be on that list too, which is a detail that catches people out.
  • Refrigerant. Systems using R-410A have been removed from the Mass Save qualified product list and earn nothing. Only R-32 and R-454B qualify. If a quote from anyone still lists R-410A, ask why before signing it.
  • Installer network registration. In Connecticut, an installation by a contractor outside the Heat Pump Installer Network is disqualified from the rebate regardless of the equipment. We are registered in both states' networks.

What drives the cost

Why two quotes on the same street differ

Energize CT publishes a typical range of $5,000 to $25,000 for a residential heat pump project. That spread is wide because the house does most of the deciding, not the equipment.

  • Zones and heads. A single-zone ductless install and a five-head multi-zone are different projects entirely.
  • Ducted or ductless. Reusing sound ductwork is cheaper. Discovering the ducts are undersized and need rework is not.
  • Electrical capacity. Older panels sometimes need an upgrade to carry the new load. Better to find that during the assessment than on installation day.
  • Line set routing. How far the outdoor unit sits from the heads, and what has to be opened up to get there.
  • What comes out. Full removal of an oil tank or boiler is different work from leaving a furnace in place as backup, and it also changes which rebate tier you qualify for.
  • Envelope condition. Air sealing and insulation lower the load, which often means smaller and cheaper equipment. Both states subsidize weatherization heavily, and doing it first changes the calculation.
