Furnace installation, sized to the house and vented correctly
A furnace is the right call when the ductwork is sound and you are staying on gas, oil or propane. The difference between a good installation and a cheap one shows up in the duct sizing, the venting and the combustion setup, none of which appear on the quote sheet.
Three fuels, one decision
Which fuel you are on usually decides itself. What is worth deciding is the efficiency tier, because that choice sets your venting, your fuel bill and your install cost all at once.
Natural gas furnaces
Where the gas main runs, this is usually the cheapest fuel to burn. High efficiency condensing models vent through the sidewall in PVC rather than up the chimney, which changes what the install involves.
Oil furnaces
Still heating a large share of homes across Tolland County and the older parts of the valley. Delivered fuel is the most expensive way to heat here, which is why we always price the alternatives alongside it.
Propane furnaces
Mechanically close to natural gas but on a tank. Same efficiency tiers, same venting choices, different fuel economics worth running the numbers on before you commit.
Worth knowing before you decide. If you are on oil or propane, a furnace is not your only option and it is not the one the state pays for. Both Connecticut and Massachusetts pay their largest incentives to replace delivered fuel with a heat pump, or to pair one with a furnace as a dual fuel system. When a new furnace beats another repair
Not every failing furnace needs replacing, and we would rather fix yours than sell you something. These are the signals that tip the math.
- Fifteen years and climbing. Most furnaces run 15 to 20 years. Past that, each repair buys less remaining life.
- The repair is a third of a replacement. Heat exchangers, control boards and inducer motors are the expensive ones.
- A cracked heat exchanger. This is not a judgment call. It is a combustion safety issue and the unit gets shut down.
- Rooms that never balance. Often a sizing or duct problem the old unit was masking, and worth solving during a changeout.
- Short cycling and rising bills. Frequently oversizing, which a like-for-like swap would repeat.
If it is a single failure on a unit with life left, that is a furnace repair, and we will say so.
What an AFUE jump actually changes
AFUE is the share of fuel a furnace turns into usable heat. At 80% AFUE, twenty cents of every fuel dollar goes up the flue. Moving from an old unit to a modern one changes that ratio directly.
Fuel use comparison
Based on published AFUE ratings. An indication of the efficiency change, not a bill estimate.
AFUE measures combustion efficiency at the furnace. It does not account for duct losses, air leakage, thermostat habits or fuel price changes, so real bills move by less than the rating alone suggests. Condensing furnaces above 90% need a condensate drain and sidewall venting, which is part of the quote rather than an extra.
The parts that decide whether it runs well
A furnace changeout is not just swapping a box. Four things get checked or corrected on every one of ours, and skipping them is how a new furnace ends up noisier and shorter lived than the old one.
Load calculation
Sized from the house rather than matched to whatever is being removed. Oversizing is the most common fault we find on recent installs.
Duct and return check
Undersized returns choke a new furnace, make it loud, and shorten the heat exchanger's life. We measure before quoting.
Venting
Going from an 80% to a condensing unit usually means abandoning the chimney for PVC sidewall venting, plus a condensate drain.
Combustion setup
Gas pressure, temperature rise and airflow set and documented at commissioning, not left at factory defaults.
