Air conditioning installation that gets the sizing right

Most cooling complaints in this area are not a broken machine. They are a system that was oversized, fitted to ductwork it was never matched to, or asked to cool rooms the air was never going to reach. Air conditioning installation done properly starts by measuring, not by matching the tonnage on the old box.

The right answer depends almost entirely on what is already in the walls. Ductwork decides most of it.

Central air conditioning

A condenser outside and a coil on your existing air handler. The straightforward path when the ductwork is sound and correctly sized, and the least visible option indoors.

Ducts, and you also heat with fuel

Heat pump instead

Same outdoor unit footprint, same ducts, but it heats as well as cools and qualifies for rebates worth thousands that a cooling-only system cannot claim.

Ductless mini split

Wall or ceiling heads with no ductwork at all. The common answer across the older housing stock here, which was built with baseboard and radiators.

Read this before you buy cooling only. If you are already replacing an air conditioner and you heat with oil, propane or electric baseboard, a heat pump uses the same ductwork and the same outdoor pad, adds heating, and qualifies for the Energize CT and Mass Save rebate tiers. Cooling-only equipment does not. The price gap is often far smaller than the rebate. We will quote both so you can see it.

Why bigger makes the house worse

Air conditioning does two jobs: it drops the temperature and it pulls moisture out of the air. The second one only happens while the system is running.

An oversized unit hits the thermostat setpoint fast and shuts off. The house is cool and still damp, which is why an oversized system can leave a room feeling clammy at 72 degrees while a correctly sized one feels comfortable at the same number. Short cycles also wear the compressor and never give the air time to distribute, so far rooms stay warm regardless of tonnage.

  • Load calculated from the house. Insulation, windows, orientation, air sealing and layout, not the label on the old condenser.
  • Return air checked first. Undersized returns are the most common fault we find, and they make a new system loud and inefficient from day one.
  • Duct condition assessed. Leaky ducts in an unconditioned attic or crawlspace can waste a meaningful share of what you paid for.
  • Coil matched to condenser. A mismatched indoor coil quietly costs you the efficiency rating you bought.

This is a rule of thumb, not an inspection. Refrigerant that needs topping up means a leak somewhere, and a system losing charge repeatedly is the clearest signal that replacement is being deferred rather than avoided.

Refrigerant, efficiency and what changed

Two things about cooling equipment have shifted recently, and both affect what you should accept on a quote.

  • The refrigerant changed. New residential systems use R-454B or R-32 rather than R-410A. It matters beyond compliance: mixing generations across an outdoor unit and an indoor coil is not an option, so a partial replacement is rarely the bargain it looks like.
  • Efficiency is rated as SEER2. The current test standard reflects real world static pressure more honestly than the old SEER number, which is why a SEER2 figure looks lower than the SEER rating people remember. Compare like with like.
  • Matched systems only. Putting a new condenser on an old indoor coil gives you neither the rated efficiency nor, usually, the warranty.
  • Line set condition. Reusing an old line set on new refrigerant needs it flushed and verified, or replaced. Skipping that step is a warranty problem waiting to happen.
