Boiler installation, including the piping most quotes leave out
Boiler installation is the least standardized job in this trade. Two quotes on the same house can differ by thousands and be describing genuinely different work, because most of what determines whether a new boiler performs sits in the piping and the controls around it rather than in the unit itself.
Water, not air
A furnace heats air and blows it through ducts. A boiler heats water and circulates it through radiators, baseboard or tubing in the floor. If your house has no ducts and no vents, this is what you have, and it is the dominant heating system across the older housing stock in this valley.
Gas boilers
Where the gas main runs. Available as conventional or condensing, and as a combi unit that also produces your domestic hot water without a separate tank.
Oil boilers
Still heating a large share of homes across Tolland County and the older parts of the valley. Durable and long lived, but delivered fuel is the most expensive way to heat here.
Propane boilers
Similar equipment to gas, on a tank. Same efficiency tiers and the same condensing decision, different fuel economics.
Combi boilers
One unit covering both space heating and domestic hot water on demand. Saves the footprint of a tank, but sizing has to satisfy the shower as well as the house. Not right for every home, and we will tell you when it is not.
A high efficiency boiler only performs if your house lets it
This is the part almost nobody explains, and it is the single biggest reason people pay for a 95% boiler and see a fraction of the saving they expected.
A condensing boiler earns its rating by pulling heat out of its own exhaust. That only happens when the water coming back from the house is cool enough, roughly below 130 degrees. If your distribution was designed to run at 180, the boiler never gets into condensing mode and spends its life operating like a conventional one that cost less.

A guide, not a design. Return water temperature depends on how the system was sized, how much radiation is installed and how it is controlled, which is why we look at the actual emitters before recommending a boiler type.
Where boiler quotes really differ
Swapping the boiler is the easy part. These are the items that separate an installation that runs quietly for twenty years from one that gives trouble in year two, and they are where a cheap quote is usually cheap.
- Near-boiler piping. The few feet of pipe immediately around the boiler control how water moves through the whole system. Reusing old piping on a modern boiler is the most common corner cut we find, and it causes short cycling, noise and premature failure.
- Primary and secondary separation. Modern boilers need a specific flow rate through them. Hydraulic separation lets the boiler and the house circulate at different rates instead of fighting each other.
- System cleaning. Decades of sludge in old iron does not belong in a new heat exchanger. Flushing, and often a magnetic filter, protects what you just bought.
- Outdoor reset control. Varies water temperature with outdoor conditions instead of running full temperature all winter. On a condensing boiler this is what actually delivers the efficiency, and it is frequently left unconfigured.
- Venting and condensate. Condensing units vent in PVC through a sidewall and produce acidic condensate that needs neutralizing before it goes to a drain.
- Expansion tank and relief sizing. Small parts, and the ones that cause callbacks when they get carried over from the old system without checking.
When a new boiler is the right call
Boilers outlast most heating equipment, and a well maintained one can run far longer than a furnace. That cuts both ways: an old boiler is often worth keeping, right up until it is not.
- Visible leaking at the block or sections. On a cast iron boiler this is usually the end, not a repair.
- Twenty five years or more. Many keep going, but parts availability starts deciding the question for you.
- Repeated low water or pressure loss. Something is leaking somewhere, and finding it matters more than topping it up.
- Rooms that never come up to temperature. Often a circulation or balance problem worth solving during a replacement rather than living with.
- Rising fuel use with no change in habits. Particularly on oil, where the cost of ignoring it accumulates fast.
If it is a circulator, a control or an ignition fault on a sound boiler, that is a boiler repair, and we would rather do that than sell you a system you do not need yet.
Worth pricing alongside it. If you are on oil or propane, the state programs pay their largest incentives to move off delivered fuel. That includes air to water heat pumps, which feed the radiators and baseboard you already have rather than requiring ductwork. Energize CT runs a separate incentive for them.
