Air conditioning repair, diagnosed before it is quoted

Blowing warm, barely blowing at all, cycling on and off, or leaving water on the floor. Most cooling faults trace back to a short list of causes, and knowing which one you have changes the conversation from a guess into a fix.

What is your system actually doing

Two observations get you most of the way to the cause: what is happening indoors, and what the outdoor unit is doing while it happens. Pick one of each.

Fault finder

An informed guess at the likely cause, not a diagnosis. It tells you what we would check first.

Likely first check

Anything involving a burning smell, water reaching electrical components, or a breaker that trips repeatedly should be shut off at the thermostat and the disconnect, then called in rather than investigated.

The usual suspects

What actually fails on residential cooling

Cooling equipment fails in fairly predictable ways. These are the faults behind most of the calls we take through a Connecticut summer, roughly in the order we see them.

01

Failed run capacitor

The single most common no-cool call. The capacitor gives the compressor and fan motor the jolt they need to start. When it goes, you often get a hum from the outdoor unit with the fan sitting still. It is an inexpensive part and a fast fix, and it is worth ruling in or out before anything else.

02

Dirty filter or blocked coil

Restricted airflow causes weak cooling, then freezes the evaporator coil solid, which stops cooling entirely and leaves water on the floor once it thaws. It is behind a surprising share of calls that look like refrigerant problems, and it is the one you can prevent yourself.

03

Clogged condensate drain

Humid stretches load the drain line with algae and sludge. Many systems have a float switch that shuts everything down when the pan fills, so the symptom is often no cooling at all rather than a visible leak. That switch is doing its job and preventing water damage.

04

Contactor failure

The electrical switch that starts the outdoor unit. Contacts pit and burn over years of cycling, and eventually the unit will not start or will not stop. Another inexpensive part that produces alarming symptoms.

05

Low refrigerant from a leak

Refrigerant is not consumed, so a system low on charge has a leak somewhere. Symptoms include weak cooling, ice on the line set and long run times. Topping it up without finding the leak buys the same problem back, and this is where honest conversations about repair versus replacement usually start.

06

Blower motor or fan motor

Indoors it means little or no airflow. Outdoors it means the system cannot dump heat, so the compressor runs hot and eventually shuts down on a safety. Often preceded by weeks of new noise.

07

Thermostat and control faults

Dead batteries, a tripped breaker, or the service switch by the air handler that looks like a light switch. These account for a real number of no-cool calls and cost you a visit, which is why we ask about them on the phone first.

08

Compressor failure

The expensive one and, thankfully, the least common. On an aging system this is the point where replacement usually makes more sense than repair, and we will show you both numbers rather than only the one that suits us.

What a visit includes

The full cooling cycle, not just the obvious part

Replacing the part that failed without asking why it failed is how systems come back three weeks later with the same fault.

  • Symptoms first. What it is doing, when it started, and what changed. Half the diagnosis happens before anyone opens a panel.
  • Thermostat, indoor unit, outdoor unit. All three get looked at, because a fault in one shows up as a symptom in another.
  • Electrical testing. Capacitors, contactors, connections and controls measured rather than eyeballed.
  • Airflow and coils. Filter condition, return air, and coil cleanliness, since restricted airflow causes faults that look like something else entirely.
  • Drainage. Drain line, pan, float switch and condensate pump. In humid weeks this is where the calls come from.
  • Verification before we leave. The system tested cooling properly, not just started up and assumed working.

What we see across this area every summer

Humidity is the defining feature of a Connecticut River valley summer, and it drives most of what goes wrong with cooling here.

Drain line clogs and condensate overflows spike during humid stretches, because a system pulling that much moisture out of the air moves a lot of water through a small pipe. Frozen coils follow the same pattern, since a filter that was adequate in June cannot keep up in August.

We take calls throughout East Windsor and Broad Brook, up through Windsor Locks and Enfield, south into Windsor, South Windsor and Hartford, east into Ellington and Vernon, and across the river into Springfield, Chicopee and Holyoke. The corridor along I-91 and Route 5 near Bradley gets busy fast during a heat wave, and so does everyone else in the region, which is the honest reason to call early rather than wait a day to see whether it recovers.

If it is a heat wave. Every contractor in the valley is booked solid within hours of the first hot day. We answer 24 hours a day and we will give you a real arrival window rather than an optimistic one. If it is genuinely urgent, emergency repair is the faster route.

★★★★★

I'm so happy! Excellent, friendly, and professional. Hunter is very knowledgeable and was also excellent with his co worker/trainee. I would definitely HIGHLY recommend this team. My issue was fixed quickly and was affordable. You guys made my day! Thank you! I will survive this heat wave!
